The classic African American spiritual song "Dem Bones" (also known as "Dry Bones"). It's a playful and rhythmic song that teaches anatomy by connecting parts of the skeleton. This so called playful song has very significant scientific meaning when viewed from a functional anatomical perspective. A very astute podiatrist, Professor Brian Rothbart has over twenty years of full spine x-rays documenting that pronation of the feet will cause a torsion through out the length of the spine. I spent three days with Professor Rothbart and filled in a major missing link. Pronated feet will also cause the temporal bones to twist. Twisted temporal bones will torque the intracranial dural membrane system causing migraine headaches. Unfortunately very few practitioners worldwide have any understanding of this mechanism. This same mechanism can also be an underlying cause for chronic sciatic pain.

As is often the case, most chronic pain patients have multifactorial origins. Case in point. A 20 year-old female basketball player for a collegiate Division I basketball team underwent surgery for herniated disc's in hopes that it would resolve her sciatic pain. Although the initial surgery relieved the sciatic pain, two weeks into preseason training her sciatic pain reappeared. When I examined the patient, three major distortions were revealed: cranial bone misalignment, dental bite interferences, and pronated feet. When all three initiators were removed, the patient's chronic sciatic pain totally disappeared.

Another example of how "Dem Bones" are connected was a 35 year-old female patient who had chronic fullness in her head. Numerous healthcare practitioners including dentists, neurologists, chiropractors, were consulted and thousands of dollars were spent with no results. A foot pronation issue existed along with temporal bone distortions were the underlying causes for her chief complaints. When the patient was placed on foot supports, it immediately stabilized her spine and cranium. Bilateral support was placed in both her shoes. One-week following the initial visit, all her chronic symptoms totally resolved.

Unfortunately there are very few practitioners who have a global understanding of how the body really works. Solving difficult chief complaints requires speciality training in dentistry, chiropractic, cranial manipulation, podiatry, medicine, physical therapy, and acupuncture to enable an accurate evaluation of the patient.
